Windows 2000 quick setup guide
for your computer to dial The World

These instructions will set up a Windows 2000 computer to dial The World, using PPP. If you are not using Windows 2000, you will need instructions for other versions of Windows.

We also have more detailed instructions for Windows 2000 (in text form). If you need further help, contact Technical Support.

Part I -- Creating & configuring a new connection

1. From the Start menu, point at "Settings", then click "Network and Dial-up Connections".

2. If the Network Connection Setup Wizard does not start up automatically, double-click "Make New Connection". The Internet Connection Wizard should now start up. Click "Next".

3. Select "Dial-up to the Internet" as your Network Connection Type. Click "Next".

7. Type in your World login_name@theworld.com and password in the "User name" and "Password" boxes respectively. (Here, "theworld.com" must be in lowercase.) If you do not enter your password you will need to enter it when you actually connect. Click "Next".

8. Name the connection. You can name it "The World" or anything else you prefer.

9. You will be prompted for whether or not you would like to set up your Internet mail account. This will allow you to set up Microsoft Outlook Express for use with the World. If you would like to do this now, select "Yes", click "Next" and enter the settings shown in the blue box at the end of this document. Otherwise, select "No" and click on the "Next" button.

10. Click "Finish". The icon for the new connection should now appear in the Network and Dial-Up Connections window.

Part II -- Connecting

1. You should already be in the Network and Dial-Up Connections window. If not, select Settings -> Network and Dial-Up Connections from the Start menu.

2. Double-click the icon you created for World.

3. Make sure you have your World login_name@theworld.com in the "User name:" box and your World password in the "Password:" box. ("theworld.com" must be lowercase here.) If you left the password blank when creating the connection, you will need to erase the row of x's in the Password box and enter your password now. If you do not want to be prompted for your password each time you connect, put a check in the "Save Password" check box.

4. Make sure the phone number looks correct. If you need to dial a ten-digit phone number, please take a look at Appendix C below.

5. Click "Dial".

6. If all goes well, within a half minute, you should have successfully started a PPP connection.

7. You can also place a shortcut to this connection on your desktop by right-clicking the icon and selecting "Make Shortcut". When you get a message asking if you would like to have the shortcut placed on the desktop, click OK.

While connected, you should be able to run Internet Explorer, Netscape, or any other Internet program.
