These instructions will set up a Windows 98 computer to dial The World, using PPP. If you are not using Windows 98, you will need instructions for other versions of Windows. We also have more detailed instructions for Windows 98 (in text form). Please refer to them if you can't find any of the items this walkthrough describes, or if your computer is currently set up to access a local TCP/IP network (such as a LAN in an office.) If you need further help, contact Technical Support. 1. Create a new Dial-Up Networking connectionCheck that Dial-Up Networking is installed: double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. It will open into a window with some icons. If you do not see the "Dial-Up Networking" icon (shown below), please switch to the detailed instructions. |

Double-click "Dial-Up Networking". (If the "Internet Setup Wizard" program opens, just close it and continue with these instructions.) Double-click "Make New Connection". |

Name this new connection "The World" and click "Next". As shown below, enter the modem access number you will use to dial The World. (You can find a local number with the blue form below the picture.) |

Click "Next", then click "Finish". 2. 10-Digit Dialing (optional)In some areas, local phone numbers must always be dialed with the area code ("10-digit dialing"). If you live in one of those areas: Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Double-click "Control Panels", then double-click "Modem". In the Modem window, click "Dialing Properties", then click "Area Code Rules", then check the box for "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)". To close the Modem control panel's windows, click "OK", then "Apply", then "OK", then "OK". 3. Configuring the new connectionDouble-click "My Computer", then double-click "Dial-Up Networking", then right-click (click the right mouse button) on the icon you created ("The World") and choose "Properties". |

Click the "Server Types" tab. For "Type of Dial-Up Server:", select "PPP, Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98". The only check boxes that should be filled are "Enable compression" and "TCP/IP", as shown below. |

Click "TCP/IP Settings". If these four boxes are not already checked, check them: "Server assigned IP address", "Server assigned name server address", "Use IP header compression", and "Use default gateway on remote network". |

Click "OK" then "OK" to close the windows. Your PPP setup is done! 4. ConnectingDouble-click "My Computer", double-click "Dial-Up Networking", double-click "The World". Enter "yourname@theworld.com" for the account name and your password for the password, as shown below. (Note: "theworld.com" must be lowercase.) |

Click "Connect" and your computer will dial The World. When it has connected, you should be able to use any Web browser (such as Internet Explorer.) You will need to set up mail and news settings in any programs you use for mail or news. Settings you will need for mail and news are:
