These instructions will set up a Windows ME computer to dial The World, using PPP. If you are not using Windows ME, you will need instructions for other versions of Windows. We also have more detailed instructions for Windows ME (in text form). Please refer to them if you can't find any of the items this walkthrough describes, or if your computer is currently set up to access a local TCP/IP network (such as a LAN in an office.) If you need further help, contact Technical Support. 1. Check what's installedCheck that Dial-Up Networking is installed: double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. It will open into a window with some icons. Look to see if there is an icon for "Dial-Up Networking". (If the left side of the window has a small link for "View all control panels", you should click that to be sure you can see them all.) If you do not have a "Dial-Up Networking" icon (shown below), please switch to the detailed instructions. |

Next, double-click the "Network" icon (shown below.) |

Under the "Configuration" tab of the "Network" control panel, you should see "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" in the installed components window. (If you have other adapters besides the Dial-Up Adapter installed you may see an arrow "->" indicating that TCP/IP is bound to the Dial-Up Adapter.) If you do not have "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP", please see the detailed instructions |

2. Create a new connectionDouble-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, then double-click "Control Panel", then double-click "Dial-Up Networking". (If a window titled "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" opens, just close it and continue with these instructions.) Double-click "Make New Connection". |

As shown above, name this new connection "The World", check that an appropriate modem is selected from the list, and click "Next". As shown below, enter the modem access number you will use to dial The World. (You can find a local number with the blue form below the picture.) Click "Next", then click "Finish". |

If you see a window that says "Dial-Up Networking needs to install the Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter...", click "OK" to automatically install it. 3. Configuring the new connectionDouble-click "My Computer", double-click "Control Panel", double-click "Dial-Up Networking", then right-click (click the right mouse button) on the icon you created ("The World") and choose "Properties". |

Click the "Networking" tab. For "Type of Dial-Up Server:", select "PPP, Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME". The only check boxes that should be filled are "Enable compression" and "TCP/IP", as shown below. |

Click "TCP/IP Settings". If these four boxes are not already checked, check them: "Server assigned IP address", "Server assigned name server address", "Use IP header compression", and "Use default gateway on remote network". |

Click "OK" then "OK" to close the windows. Your PPP setup is done! 4. ConnectingDouble-click "My Computer", double-click "Control Panel", double-click "Dial-Up Networking", double-click "The World".
