The World command "charges" allows you to see how much time you have been logged in during the current month, or to review charges from previous months. Note that charges is actually a program which reports time, not money: if you change billing plans, charges will report past months' time accurately, but the dollar figures will be as if you had been at your new billing rate. If you do need documentation of previous billing, send mail to "office@world.std.com".
Command Description ------- ----------- charges review login sessions and charges for current month. charges -t review only totals for connection time and charges. charges -w review only HomePage Alone service charges charges 1 review charges for a specific month in the current year. charges 1 1994 review charges for a specific month in a previous year.
You may view a list of your login sessions and the total charges your World Account has incurred for the current month with the command:
world% charges
To limit output to your total connect time and total charges, use
the -t flag:
world% charges -t
To list your HomePage Alone charges, where hits and bytes transferred
are detailed separately, use the -w flag:
world% charges -w
To see charges information for previous months, use the number of a month (1-12) with the "charges" command. For instance, to see January's charges for the current year:
world% charges 1
To view the charges for months in the previous year, use the number of
the month and year with the "charges" command. For instance to see
October 1995 charges:
world% charges 10 1995 charges sends its output to stdout, so you can redirect and filter its that output just as you can with standard UNIX commands. For example, to get your charges in email, if your login name is "jones", just run:
world% charges | mail jones &(The ampersand ("&") makes the command run in the background.)
We ran an article in Today on The World about creating a shell script to occasionally run charges and mail you the results automatically when you log in. This is probably of particular interest to customers who only use TCP software and rarely or never use the shell. You can read that article by hitting <enter> or clicking here.
