Commands Description -------- ----------- emacs Run Emacs to access GNUS. M-x gnus Invoke GNUS from within Emacs C-c Tab Access online help within GNUS.
GNUS is a GNU/Emacs USENET news reader that has many user-friendly features. Foremost of these features is having the power of Emacs at your disposal to edit your own newsgroup postings and read your email, among other things. It also places the newsgroups in a separate window from the messages. To use GNUS you must first run Emacs by typing: world% emacs Once within the Emacs environment, you can initiate GNUS by typing: `M-x gnus' where `M-x' means hold down the `Meta' or `Escape' character and the `x' simultaneously, then type "gnus". Once you have loaded GNUS you can access it's online help area by typing: `C-c TAB' In lay persons terms this means, press the Control (often referred to as "crtl") key and `c' simultaneously, then press the "TAB" key.
1. If you end up in the wrong buffer or your buffer seems to come loose of its moorings (for example, the subjects appear at the bottom of the screen) while reading a particular group, try:keystrokes explanation
---------- ----------- ^Xb*Subject*<ENTER> switch to the *Subject* buffer ^X1 (Crtl-x one) make it fill the screen(note: ^X means CONTROL-X, hold down CONTROL like a SHIFT and hit X, <ENTER> means hit RETURN or ENTER or even ^M)
Your cursor will be positioned on the next article for reading. Pressing SPACE now will return our buffer to its proper, normal state.
2. Save the state of your gnus sessions occasionally so that if a modem hangs up it won't be disasterous. While in the screen that lists all of the newsgroups, hit s (ess, "s", as in save.)
3. To read rotated or rot-13 articles hit ^C^R (two keystrokes.) Note that these articles have been encrypted FOR A REASON, they're usually offensive.
4. When saving an article to a file, using ^O will strip off some unnecessary header information, reducing the file size.
5. You can move newsgroups around by moving to the newsgroup on the screen, hitting ^K (kill) to cut it, and then moving to where you want it and typing ^Y ("yank" from kill buffer) to paste it back.
