Mail aliases allow you to have multiple names for a single mail box. A typical use would be if your login name is "jones" and you want an E-mail alias of the form "davy.jones@world.std.com" or "jones-plumbing@world.std.com". We can set up such aliases for you, and they will work in addition to your original mail address. A mail alias is not a separate mailbox, and generally won't work well if you intend to have multiple individuals share an account (because all mail is delivered to a single mailbox, and there are likely to be problems with one person accidentally reading another's mail, deciding whom mailing list mail is for, etc.).
A mail alias does not change the mail domain--your mail address will still be at world.std.com. If you do want to have a domain of your own, we can support that with our Kiosk Mailbox Service.
Two mail aliases are included with the World Gold Plan. Mail aliases are not available with the World A La Carta Plan.
Mail sent from mail programs that run under the UNIX shell will still reflect your UNIX login name, not the E-mail alias. Most software that runs on microcomputers (e.g., Eudora, Netscape Mail, Microsoft mail products) can be set to have any From: address you like.
Please contact The World's staff (support@world.std.com) if you are interested in establishing a mail alias.
