Customizating your UNIX shell, programming on The World

Customization and programming in the UNIX environment

How can a character based interface like the UNIX shell retain such popularity? Part of the answer is that there are a number of well-documented, well-developed programming tools. This part of our help system is designed to help interested customers explore those tools.

There are several major systems World customers can use.

Aliases
Aliasing is a simple mechanism to save typing at the UNIX shell
Shell Scripting
Shell scripts can automate sequences of UNIX commands. They allow for error checking, condition checking, etc.
PERL
PERL is a full-fledged programming langauge. It's relatively easy to start with (if you've used programming languages in the past), and gives easier access to complex data structures than does shell programming.
