File Recovery

We make backups on magnetic tape of The World four times each day at regular intervals. With some exceptions we can recover any deleted or modified file from the backup tapes. We will fulfill all reasonable requests for file recovery at no charge. We cannot guarantee that all files are recoverable, however. For example, if you create and then delete a file in a time period when no backups were processed, we will have no record of the file and will be unable to restore it.

What can be recovered: 

	Lost, corrupted, deleted, or modified files and directories. 


	Deleted mail messages and mail folders (in pine). 


	Configuration files for newsreaders and other programs.
	Recovering these files will return the associated programs to
	their previous states.




To initiate a recovery request, type:


	world%  recover


You will then be asked to supply the following information about the
files that you want to recover:


	1. The filename or description of the missing item(s).
	2. When you first noticed files were missing.
	3. When you last knew that these files were intact.
	4. Any other details that might help us recover the item(s).


The more complete and precise your answers are, the easier it will be 
for us to locate and restore the items.


	5. Do we have your permission to list the contents of your
	   directories?



This final question addresses our need to look at filenames in your
directories to process your request efficiently and avoid
over-writing your existing files.  It is our policy not to read the
contents of your files or email messages.  If you choose not to give
us permission to list your files, we may need to contact you for
further information as well as to verify the name that you want the
recovered file to have.  


Once you have posted a request with the `recover' command, we will
attempt the restore and contact you via email within two days with
the results of our efforts.
