Majordomo
Majordomo is a perl script which automates the management of
Internet mailing lists. It is executed via email; users send
e-mail to Majordomo with instructions in the body of the
message, and the perl script performs the requested actions
and responds with the results. Any text in the "Subject"
line is ignored. Majordomo provides:
* Automatic handling of subscribe and unsubscribe requests.
* Automatic pruning of subscribe and unsubscribe messages when
they are sent to the list instead of the -request address.
* The ability for an interested party to request an information
message about the list.
* The ability to rewrite headers to insure that replies are sent to
the list and errors to the list owner.
* The ability to run a moderated mailing list where all submissions
must be approved by the list owner before being sent to the list
members.
* The ability to produce and send a fully automated digest of an
existing list (this digest list counts as a separate mailing list)
General information for mailing list administrators:
* The file containing the list addresses is under the control of
Majordomo. You will be able to make changes to the file by sending
commands to the Majordomo server, but you will not be able to
edit the file directly.
* You will be assigned a password to perform administrative commands.
* People wishing to join or depart the list must send mail to the
Majordomo server, "majordomo@world.std.com", to do so. As the
adminstrator for your list, you will be notified of such activity,
but will not be required to direct it.
* The "list-request" address will be answered by a recording
explaining how to use Majordomo to subscribe or unsubscribe from
this list.
* As the mailing list administrator, you will be reachable via the
"list-approval" email address.
* Messages sent to the list will pass though a filter which will
rewrite the mail headers, it is helpful to prune out subscribe
and unsubscribe messages sent to the list, and queue the message
for background processing.
If you wish to run your list through Majordomo, send mail to "mls-owner"
with the completed MLS-rates application. You will be notified when
the list is created (generally 2 to 5 days, though we will do it as
quickly as possible), and you will receive a document describing the
various administrative commands.
