Private Anonymous FTP
on The World Kiosk

A private anonymous ftp site comes with every World Kiosk Web Site, and this service is ideal for anybody who has to handle large files over the Internet. Instead of sending multiple copies of big files to different people who may or may not need it, you put the file up in the anonymous ftp site, and create a link to the site that customers can open in a browser and then download files.

http://www.invinoveritas.com/ftp/download contains two documents, one Word7 version and another rich text format version, that explain how The World works when it comes to high-end web hosting. Rather than send one or both of those files to a few thousand Kiosk customers (a lot of people won't even be able to cope with the Word7 version), I can send the link and let people go get it.

Once you've gotten familiar with this basic functioning of anonymous ftp, you can start to build some depth and structure into it.

For example, create two folders in the anonymous ftp site. Name one folder upload and the other download. Now change the permissions on the upload folder with the chmod command.

world% chmod 753 upload

Now the permissions on this folder are set such that anyone logged into the ftp site anonymously can copy files up to the folder, but can't see any files or download anything. The permissions on the download folder are normally set to 755 by Fetch and CuteFTP and the like automatically, and this is right for letting people log on and copy files from you to them. If not, make the permissions right by doing

world% chmod 755 download

As the owner of the site, you have complete access to both folders, so you can maintain them by adding or deleting files as necessary.

Here are the instructions for setting up anonymous ftp with your Kiosk Web Site. Any questions, contact kiosk@world.com, or call us at (617) 739-4927.

Instructions for Anonymous FTP

The directory where your WebSite files are served is:

/kiosk/Newbury/yourfolder/

Files to be distributed via anonymous FTP should be placed in:

/kiosk/ftp/Newbury/yourfolder

Set the permission rules to these files with:

world% chmod 755 /kiosk/ftp/Newbury/yourfolder

The URL to those files is:

ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/Newbury/yourfolder/

and this is where you will instruct users to find or deposit files. You can also use the URL

http://www.yourdomain.com/ftp

and your customers can go there to download files.
