Fitting the Windshield

Fitting the Windshield

We used our "prototyped" windshield for fitting.

A - Before installing the windshield, we needed to install the top piece. We bolted it to the front wing attachment holes, per the instructions. However, this piece was a little flexible and moved when we tried to fit the windshield.

So, we secured it for the windshield fitting. We used a 90 degree piece of metal. We clamped this by using a piece of wood inside the plane and shims under the clamp on the windshield side. This helped a lot.

B - The cleco at the right is connecting the windshield with the tubing. The body fiberglass piece is covering this corner. We are not sure yet how that fiberglass gets finally fitted.

C - Notice that the windshield is still not 'trimmed' on the front downtube. The cleco line on the downtube will be where the hinge on top of the door fits.

This is the completed "prototyped" windshield installed with a few cleco's.

We found it very helpful to 'bow' the windshield by using ratched tie down straps. We found it important to put the ratchet on the windshield side. The windshield simply slid down the strap. When we put the ratched side inside the plane, the windshield did not slide easily.

This is how the front corner of the windshield fit. Again, we still need to trim the excess along the side tube.
